Southdale Mall

Edina, MN

Brutalist sculpture in Southdale Mall

Southdale Mall opened in 1956 and was the first enclosed mall in the nation. Designed by Victor Gruen, a European socialist, as a community center for suburbanites. It was intended to bring people together.  Much of the original modern architecture was lost in a major redesign during the 1990's.

Today, Southdale is being remodeled yet again. My question is - what was wrong with it in the first place? I hope that they do not demolish the brutalist sculpture in the center of the mall or this modern clock - two of the last remaining gems in Southdale Mall.
